The next few days were painful. Kaylee’s heart was torn between wanting to see Jade, to talk with her, to laugh with her again, and her smoldering anger stemming from what Jade had said to her. Because it was clear that as much as Kaylee wanted to see Jade, Jade just as equally strongly didn’t want to see her. Every time Kaylee swung by her house, Bummi would inform her that Jade was sleeping or busy with something else. Kaylee knew perfectly well Jade was avoiding her, but at the same time she didn’t press it.

Maddox, apparently, didn’t run into the same issue. More than once Kaylee had tried to find him, only to be told by Bummi and a very snarky Zaria that he was with Jade.

“I’m no expert but he likes her,” she said, failing to hide her suggestive grin. “Who knew the big guy was so sensitive?”

As annoying as Zaria was, Kaylee didn’t feel like trying to explain the intricacies of Jade and Maddox’s relationship. About how Jade had been the one to bring him into the Convocation following his stint with the Slayers. How they had trained together for years before Kaylee had even known the Convocation existed. The more she thought about it, the more she considered that maybe there was something different about their relationship that she’d missed these past couple years. Maybe Jade did want to see Maddox more than her.

That thought hurt just as much.

Kaylee kept telling herself that wasn’t the case, even as over the next few days she wandered aimlessly around the village trying to keep herself occupied. Even while she took strolls that just happened to pass Jade’s house while Maddox was there, and she might have, just on a whim, tried to listen in. But no matter how close she got the most she could ever make out was their was low, soft voices. Soft enough that Kaylee felt like she was intruding on something extremely private and stopped trying to listen in altogether.

At least Zaria had been right: it seemed Maddox had forgiven Jade.

Despite this, Maddox was still sullen and silent at their dinners, and even Zaria, usually one to poke fun at their misery regardless of the circumstances, had heaved a defeated sigh at their last meal when it had dragged on in near-silence.

“You,” she’d pointed a fork at Maddox who looked up sharply from his plate of fish and plants. “You and Jade are speaking again so whatever the issue is, get over it and start, I don’t know, being your normal and probably annoying self. And you,” the finger had swiveled on Kaylee, “Stop moping around. I see you doing it and it’s pathetic. Go help Bummi and the others tomorrow.”

“Oh, that won’t be necessary…” Bummi tried to say but Zaria cut him off with a chop of her hand. “Go help Bummi and the others,” she repeated.

“And what are you going to do?” Kaylee had said.

Zaria scooped her empty plate up. “Me? I’ve got a couple people I need to talk to.
